Provenance & Authenticity
Every work offered by Gallery in the Woods is sourced directly from our gallery or our private collection. We do not use third‑party consignors, and we do not list works without verified origin.
Our provenance standards include:
Clear ownership history whenever available
Edition verification for lithographs, engravings, etchings, and serigraphs
Artist signatures documented when present
Publisher or printer information for modern and contemporary editions
Historical context for older works, including period printings and posthumous editions
Direct documentation for works with inscriptions, dedications, or unique attributes
Our gallery’s website and research are referenced during live auction broadcasts hosted by Ray Taylor’s Fine Art Auction, where our collection is used as a valuation comparison for modern and contemporary artists. We appreciate being included among the professional resources consulted during these events.
Edition Terminology
Collectors often encounter specialized terminology. Here is how we use it:
First State, First Printing The earliest impression of a print, taken from the plate or stone before any changes were made. These impressions are historically significant and often the most desirable.
Original Lithograph / Engraving / Etching A print created directly from the artist’s hand‑drawn or hand‑engraved matrix.
Posthumous Edition A print made after the artist’s death from an original plate or stone, typically authorized by the artist’s estate or a museum.
Archival Print A modern pigment print produced with museum‑grade materials for longevity and color accuracy.

Our Curatorial Philosophy
Every work in our collection is chosen with purpose. We focus on pieces that contribute to the broader story of Impressionism, Modernism, and Contemporary art — works that demonstrate technique, historical relevance, and artistic intent.
Our curatorial approach emphasizes:
Historical continuity We select works that show the evolution of artistic ideas from the late 19th century to today.
Technical excellence Works must demonstrate strong craftsmanship, whether through printmaking, draftsmanship, or painterly technique.
Edition integrity We prioritize first‑state, first‑printing impressions, signed works, and editions with clear documentation.
Artistic relevance Pieces must contribute meaningfully to the artist’s body of work or to the movement they represent.
Condition standards Works are evaluated for paper quality, color retention, plate tone, margins, and overall preservation.
Provenance clarity We only offer works with verifiable origin, and we provide documentation when available.
Selection Criteria
A work is considered for inclusion only if it meets several of the following criteria:
Demonstrates historical or stylistic significance
Represents a key period in the artist’s development
Is part of a recognized edition or series
Is signed or inscribed by the artist
Has strong collector interest or market stability
Enhances the narrative of our exhibitions
Aligns with the gallery’s mission of intentional curation
Exhibition Standards
Our exhibitions are designed to:
Educate visitors through clear historical context
Present works in chronological or thematic order
Highlight connections between artists and movements
Balance masterworks with contemporary voices
Create a cohesive visual and narrative experience
Each show is built to tell a story — one that connects viewers to the evolution of artistic vision across time.
